Today's Gospel: Mark 8:14-21

The disciples had just watched Jesus miraculously take their seven loaves of bread and multiply that to feed four thousand people. Not only that, but there were even seven baskets full of leftovers! Surely the disciples would remember this miraculous and powerful event and the witness of Jesus’ power and ability to do more than they could ever think or imagine!

Yet just a couple of verses later in today’s Gospel, the disciples panic over forgetting to bring bread, remembering that they have only one loaf with them. As Jesus is trying to teach them, they are still focused on the bread and believe that Jesus is talking about their lack of food.

\When Jesus realizes this, it is clear that they still do not understand the lesson found in the multiplication of the bread. The reason that the disciples do not hear Jesus’ lesson is because they are still so focused on their own worry that they haven’t brought enough food to eat. They are still not trusting the Lord even after witnessing His miracles.

And isn’t this just like us? That while Jesus is trying to teach us, we are still stuck in our own worry, even though He has shown us time and time again that He will provide for us. How many times have we missed what the Lord is trying to teach us or say to us because we don’t trust that He will provide for us?

Today, if you are filled with worry, bring to mind the last time you felt this way and how the Lord provided for you. Maybe even journal about it. Then let today’s worries melt away so that you can focus on the present lesson that Jesus is trying to teach you.

Ponder:

Have I not heard from the Lord because I refuse to allow the Lord to take care of this worry I have?

Pray:

Lord, bring to my mind the last time You multiplied the loaves of bread in my own life. Help me to see that You will provide again and that I don’t need to bring anything to the table except for myself.
