Today's Gospel: John 1:35-42

Today’s Gospel shows the power of mentorship in the ability to create confident disciples. We do not simply see God in others. We see God with and through others as well.

In my young adulthood, I had plans that spanned decades, and a stubborn independent streak that could rival the most isolated being. Multiple personality tests put “achiever” and “doer” as my top qualities.

God made me a mother to show me how critical others were to my life, from tricks for a sleepless child, medical diagnoses over the phone, and mostly wisdom to help process each stage of my children’s lives. We cannot always discern the larger picture when we are focused on any one particular event of family life. We rely on others to help us put the pieces together of our lives. Our Gospel shows us this same need.

In our first reading today, Samuel needs Eli to understand his call from the Lord. He is confused until his mentor can realize what is happening and explain it to him. This sets up the Gospel: The disciples are prepared to follow Jesus because,

“John was standing . . ., and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, 'Behold, the Lamb of God.'

The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus." John 1:35-37

They were formed by John the Baptist, and so when the time came, they knew what they were looking for. There is no hesitation, and with confidence and grace, they follow Jesus.

In motherhood and faith, we must be guided by one another, so when any particular calling comes, we recognize Jesus for who He is in our lives and act accordingly.

Ponder:

Who in your life helps you discern the Lord's will?

Pray:

Good and gracious God, I thank You for the gift of community today. Guide my heart to be open to the wisdom of elders so that I may confidently seek You and offer Your wisdom to others that You place in my path.
