Today's Gospel: Mark 10:28-31
When my children were little I would do anything and everything for them. I gave most of my time every day to providing for their physical and emotional wellbeing. Now, being an empty-nester, I am struggling to adjust my attention and energy to things other than mothering. The desire to talk to my children every day and continue to be a part of their lives is still strong. But they need to exert their independence and learn to handle problems on their own. It is time to let them go and focus my time on God and my husband.
To be a true follower of Christ, we should be willing to give up everything and put God first. Doing what Jesus would do to help others and spending time praising Him in private and public prayer is most important. Doing things for myself and my own gratification should come last.
St. Ignatius, in his Spiritual Examen, challenges us to have an attitude of ‘indifference’ toward anything other than God. This means we should not be attached to anything in order to feel happy: not a person (like our husband or children), or a material thing (like our home or car), or even our health. We ought to be willing to surrender it all if that is what God wills for us today.
Then as Jesus says in today’s Gospel:
“There is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age . . . and eternal life in the age to come.”
Put God first and the reward will be tremendous both on earth and in heaven.
Ponder:
What do I need to let go of because it is more important to me than God?
Pray:
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me and rewarding me for giving my life over to You and help me when I struggle to put You first.
