Today's Gospel: Matthew 21:33-43, 45-46

Sometimes I read a Gospel passage and think to myself, "How in the world did these people get things so mixed up? How did they not see what was right in front of them?" And then other times, like in today’s reading, I see myself in the chief priests and the Pharisees, those who think they know what’s going on, but really have things upside down and inside out. And I have to ask myself, "How have I not seen what’s right in front of me?"

God works in mysterious ways, yes, but sometimes He works in very obvious ways and we just don’t have the eyes to see Him. We allow worldly things—some of them even good in their own right—to stand between ourselves and the Lord, and through time, along with our concupiscence, things get out of whack. We lose our perspective. Our priorities shift out of line.

Christ quotes this line in the Gospel today:

“The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes.” Matthew 21:42

Even in our messiness, the Lord does wonderful things. He offers us mercy and grace. He invites us still closer to Himself. He loves us so thoroughly, so profoundly, and He encourages us to share that love with others, imperfect as we are.

You may have hit a rough patch in your Lenten observance, and that’s okay. That’s an opportunity to lean on the Lord again and even more. And if you’re doing well, then that’s an opportunity to thank God for the help He’s given you thus far, to recognize the grace comes from Him not us, and to rejoice that He’ll be with us to the end.

Ponder:

When have you been too proud to admit you were wrong, and when have you experienced the grace of God-given humility?

Pray:

Lord, You know me fully and completely, my strengths and my struggles. Thank You for seeing me as I am, as Your precious child. I trust You will give me the grace to draw nearer to You this Lent.
