Reflect on the importance of sharing wealth with the vulnerable and teaching children compassion in today's Gospel reflection from Luke 16:19-31 by Maria V. Gallagher.

Today's Gospel: Luke 16:19-31

When I was in elementary school, we frequently held fundraisers for those who had fallen into tough times. We collected canned goods for struggling families and coins for children whose parents lacked the money to buy shoes. I credit my teachers, school administrators, and parents for awakening in me a desire to help people in their time of need.
Today’s Gospel reading underscores the importance of sharing our wealth with the most vulnerable. The rich man in his regal purple clothes, dining on the finest meals, ignored the plight of poor Lazarus, who would have gratefully consumed the wealthy man’s leftovers.

In the end, each man receives what he deserves in the afterlife. Lazarus enjoys eternal comfort, brought to glory by the angels. In sharp contrast, the rich man is tormented by the sins of his past.

Our Lord is a God of justice and carries out punishment and reward in a thoughtful manner. We cannot escape His judgment, but we can rest in the knowledge that His wisdom will prevail.

As parents, we have a duty to teach our children to show love to everyone—even those they do not personally like. We must also educate them about the importance of caring for the poor and the marginalized. A life of service can give all of us a sense of purpose. It also is likely to make us more compassionate people.

Let us all resolve to redouble our efforts to assist those in need. It is an important practice, not only for this life, but for the next. When outsiders see us attending to those who are hurting, they may just see the face of Christ within us. With our evangelization, we spread the good news that God loves us and wants what is best for us.

Ponder:

How can you teach your children this week to have a heart for the poor?

Pray:

O loving Father, You have taught us to care for those who are struggling. Help us to always be ready to serve the most vulnerable among us.

Pray Together:

This week, make an effort as a family to donate to a local food bank or soup kitchen.
