Reflection by Lisa Connor
Today's Gospel: Matthew 5:20-26
Immediately following a confusing sermon that seems to honor what may be seen as weakness, Jesus hits hard with a reminder that anger, judgment, and libel are analogous to, well, murder.
That irritation you harbor with an annoying friend? Yes, murder.
That judgment of a relative’s lifestyle? Yes, murder again.
That bit of “information” (gossip) you shared with a friend? Murder, too.
We often allow these types of actions because they don’t seem as weighty as sins like murder, but Jesus does not distinguish or establish levels of sin. It ALL leads to darkness. It ALL hardens our hearts. It ALL moves us away from Jesus.
The solution to a better world? Stop the everyday killing. Edit unkind words. Squash resentments. Eliminate compassionless interactions and spiteful thoughts.
Darkness is not passive and therefore, neither can we be. Opposing darkness is a personal responsibility.
We must work to protect our hearts from darkness.
Develop a merciful heart that seeks to forgive.
Seek to love your neighbor unconditionally with compassion.
Use your voice to commend and support rather than criticize.
Be accountable for mean-spirited thoughts.
Force yourself to change.
When we change for good, we change those around us. Good is the force that changes the world. Blessed are those who resist darkness. They are a source to bring light to the world. Be a source of light. Be a force for good in this battered world.
Ponder:
Do I actively fight darkness, or do I wait for it to ooze into my life and then plan defense? How can I actively change my habits to be ready to fight darkness head on?
Pray:
Dear Lord, help me be accountable. Let me seek habits that combat darkness with their very existence. Help me reflect more light in the world.
