Reflect on humility and the dangers of pride in spiritual life with insights from Luke 18:9-14, and learn how to apply these lessons in your family.

Today's Gospel: Luke 18:9-14

Jesus was so kind to speak to us in parables so He could teach without pointing the finger and talking openly about the bad behavior of His followers. As parents, we can also employ that tactic and use bedtime stories to teach moral values to our children. You can use your imagination to create stories based on what you need to teach or to develop in them.

Today's parable is about pride, especially regarding our spiritual life. When we live a life of prayer and spiritual relationship with God, we must be careful not to judge others. Only God sees the heart; we can only see appearances. To judge the person is always unfair because we don't know whether if we had the same education, if we suffered the same traumas as that person, we wouldn't behave much worse than her.

Humility is the key to holiness. He who is humble acknowledges all the good things that one does or has are a grace from God and that without those graces, he is nothing. Pride blinds us: We don't see our faults, and we don't see others' virtues.

In family life, it is important to be humble and see all the good the other members of the family have. It is vital to compliment our spouse and children. We criticize quickly and we forget to praise. We must be mindful that each one of us is unique and develops their relationship with God in its own way and rhythm. It is fine if the other person never reaches the same level of holiness as you, and that doesn't mean he is worse than you, only that he is different.

Ponder:

How many times did I judge someone last week? How can I remind myself not to do that again?

Pray:

Dear Mother of God, please help me be a humble servant of the Lord and to realize that all the good that I do is because God is working through me.

Pray Together:

Talk to each other about three good qualities each member of the family has and thank God for them.
