Today's Gospel: Luke 15:1-3, 11-32
In the parable of The Prodigal Son, there are a few main characters. The father represents our Heavenly Father. Then there are the two sons.
I have always been glad to think that I am not like the prodigal son in the sense that I am frugal and not a squanderer. My kids even tease me about how frugal I am since I am not into buying the latest and greatest.
I do love how the father is so happy to see his wayward son, so sometimes I wonder what it would be like to throw caution to the wind and run away on a frivolous trip. Since I have not done that, I believe I am closer to the other brother. He sounds a little resentful of all the attention the Father is showering on the son who left and wasted the gifts bestowed on him. That seems human to me, and it does not feel fair. Then the Father tells him to celebrate and rejoice.
We are supposed to be happy when things are not fair? That does not make sense. But the Father goes on to say that we are celebrating what was dead and lost, and it is now alive and found. God may not seem fair to those of us who are around Him all the time, but He ultimately knows what we need and what others need even when we do not know what that is. We can rely on his words of comfort:
“My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours.”
Since we are with Him always, we can also celebrate and rejoice, and we can share His love with those who have been lost and are now found.
Ponder:
Which son do you think you are, and do you ever feel resentful of how God has given His gifts to others? How can you share His abundant love instead?
Pray:
Heavenly Father, You are so generous, especially in our need. Please help us to remember that You know what we need even when we do not know what we need.
