Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: Luke 9:18-22

“Who am I?” This is usually a question I ask myself internally, but not actually out loud. While praying away from the crowds, Jesus is brave enough to ask His closest friends, “Who am I?” First, He asks them who the other people think He is, and they reply with some of the most popular and famous prophets in history. That seems like a very ego-boosting response! I think if I asked my friends who they thought I was and they responded with Mother Teresa or Gandhi, I would be feeling pretty good about myself. But I do know a little bit more about myself, and I am no saint or contemplative. I am working on it though.

Jesus does go on to ask His close friends, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter speaks on behalf of them all that He is the Messiah of God. They have been with Jesus for quite awhile and have gotten to know Him intimately. They have eaten, slept, laughed, cried, argued, and studied with Him. By then, they probably really did know who He truly was. I believe that I probably truly know who my husband is, who my kids are, and who my parents are (at least I knew them the best while I was growing up). The best way to know someone is to be fully present and around them the most often. This is a great way to build our prayer life. If we want to truly know Jesus and who He is, it takes spending time with Him. In prayer, in the Gospels, at Mass, and at Eucharistic Adoration. All these will lead to a better answer than the crowds'. We will be much better able to confess that Jesus is truly the Messiah of God.

Ponder:

How do you get to know someone better? Do you take the time to get to know Jesus and who He is?

Pray:

Lord, please inspire me to get to know You better. Open Yourself up to me so I can truly know You.
