Today's Gospel: Matthew 7:1-5
Driving around has become a dangerous pastime, but we still need to get from place to place. I feel like it is so easy to judge someone else’s driving since we are not actually engaging with them. We see the other drivers from a distance, contained in their vehicles. They certainly cannot see us and our judging expressions or hear our judgmental words. Sometimes it is easy to forget that glass is see-through.
Not long ago, I started wondering about the other drivers and what could have made them cut me off or speed past me. The next thought I had was, do I really know their story? My family would jokingly say about a driver going too fast, “I hope they make it to the hospital in time to deliver the baby!” Then we would bless them as they zoomed past us.
When we realize that we do not know the other person’s story, it helps us to look past the wooden beam in our own eye. Now, are there drivers out there who are not driving honorably or nobly or even safely? Of course! However, as it says in today’s Gospel, I am not the judge. If I keep judging, then I will be measured with the same amount as I judged. So next time I’m rushing to the hospital, hopefully I will not be judged as I had judged other drivers. Maybe I will receive a blessing instead.
Ponder:
When you want to judge another person’s actions, do you think about their story?
Pray:
Lord, please help us to remove the wooden beam from our own eye, so we can see clearly to not judge others.
