Reflection by Kathy Mallery Schober

Today's Gospel: Luke 1:26-38

I can’t help it. I am in awe when I think about the Annunciation. I love this Gospel story. There is so much to love! Right away, we are reminded of how prophecies are fulfilled in Jesus. Luke 1:27 reflects upon today’s reading from Isaiah, introducing us to Mary, a virgin of the House of David.

And we have Archangel Gabriel making a dramatic appearance with an even more dramatic message. His greeting is “Hail,” a word reserved for someone of great importance. He describes Mary as having already been filled with grace, according to studies of the text in Greek.

Mary’s response? She is troubled but curious.

Gabriel momentarily seeks to calm Mary’s fears but then launches into his “big reveal.” She will conceive and bear the Son of God.

Mary’s response? She has questions.

Her questions, rather than indicating a lack of faith, reveal a trust in God’s plans and an interest in understanding her role in fulfilling them.

Gabriel’s explanation fills me with awe.

“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.”

Mary’s response? Yes, please.

My response? Wow!

May we have faith like Mary.

Faith that seeks to understand.

Faith that overcomes fear.

Faith that changes the world.

Ponder:

How can I strengthen my faith so that I too may choose to respond to God's will for my life with curiosity, trust, and active cooperation?

Pray:

Most High God, help me to know Your will for my life. Holy Spirit, come upon me and fill me with Your gifts, so that I may be a vessel of God's grace in this world.
