Reflection by Kathryn Mulderink

Today's Gospel: Luke 1:26-38

On today’s magnificent feast, we pause to reflect on the awesome truth that God has become flesh and walked on this earth to save us, teach us how to love, and to be our way, all truth, and fullness of life. The maker of all became small to become the brother and savior of all.

Love starts with little things. Things so small they are invisible to the eye. But these things require our consent, our yes, every step of the way. When the Word leapt down from his throne to earth, He did it in a way hidden from our eyes. But Mary was saying yes - a trusting, humble yes - for all humanity, every step of the way.

What wonders the Lord of Love was already working in the young girl in Nazareth, no one could see. But she was steadfastly the handmaid of the Lord all along. What plans the Almighty One had for her, no one could know. But she was always ready to say yes, let it be done, whenever they were known to her. The Lord was filling her with His presence and His grace from the moment of her Immaculate Conception. And even as an angel brought God’s Word to this young virgin, the Word had already blossomed in her pure soul; and then the Most High overshadows her and the Eternal Word became flesh within her pure womb.

For us. For you and for me. For now and forever. The fiat of this young virgin changed the history of the world and allowed our maker to join with His creation in a mysterious way in order to draw all of us into the glorious love, life, and joy of His eternal being.

Today we rejoice with gratitude that God became man. Forever.

Ponder:

In a culture that has turned from its creator, how can I be mindful of His true presence in our world and remind my family that He is with us always?

Pray:

Lord, I thank You for Your nearness - in my heart, in my family, in the Blessed Sacrament. Give me the grace to see You in each person and to give thanks for the gift of the Eucharist, where You come to dwell in my heart.
