Today's Gospel: Luke 15:1-3, 11-32

There are times when we can identify with both the prodigal son and the older brother in today’s Gospel reading. We all have our prodigal moments. Each of us is a sinner in need of the Father’s mercy. The older brother in the parable had forgotten his own need of forgiveness and harbored resentment in his heart toward his younger brother, who had fallen into sin.

As members of the Body of Christ, we may find it challenging to welcome newcomers or those who have recently returned to the Church. Like the older brother, we become complacent in our comfort zones and may be resistant to change. It can take effort to reach out to others who are new members of our church communities. However, we are called to welcome the repentant sinner, like the father of the Prodigal Son. We may be tempted to feel prideful or envious toward our brothers and sisters who receive the robe, the ring, and the fatted calf. We may complain when, after years of faithfulness, it seems we don’t receive this favored treatment from our Father.

This Fourth Sunday of Lent, we are reminded to imitate the loving Father, Who welcomes back those who have strayed from the fold. We should remember that we are all sinners and at times are still on the receiving end of God’s mercy, so we should extend that mercy to others as well.

Ponder:

How am I reaching out to those who are new to the faith and extending God’s love and mercy to them?

Pray:

Father, I humbly ask forgiveness for my sins. Teach me to receive the prodigal children in my life with love.
