Today's Gospel: Luke 11:14-23

Today’s Gospel is such a fascinating story. The crowds see Jesus cast out demons and work simply for the good of a man, yet rather than be amazed by Christ’s compassion and power, they take this as an opportunity to accuse Him. They shout that

“By the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he drives out demons." Luke 11:15

Jesus simply reminds them that this is a foolish notion by saying,

“Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house. And if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand?” Luke 11:17-18

Jesus isn’t simply making a comment on how the hierarchy of demons works or the realities of spiritual warfare. He is taking this opportunity to warn against division and disunity. He goes on to say,

“Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” Luke 11:23

There are many spiritual lessons to learn from this, but there are also some everyday lessons we can learn as well. Disunity leads to collapse. This is true for all communities, whether it be one’s parish, the Church as a whole, a town, or even a family.

Now some might take this to mean that they should always double down and ensure that whenever they have a disagreement, they force others to see how wrong they are. I take this, however, to be a call to compassion, mercy, and forgiveness, as Christ so often calls us to.

Especially considering family life, it is important to seek unity through love and forgiveness rather than willpower. We are called to be patient when our family members make mistakes, and we are called to seek forgiveness when we make our own. Unity must come from compassion.

Ponder:

How do I seek unity in all areas of my life, especially with those whom I disagree?

Pray:

Christ, through our baptism, we are brought into Your mystical body, the Church. Never let me stray from Your side, and guide me to unity with You and my brothers and sisters.
