Today's Gospel: Matthew 11:20-24
Jesus takes an especially harsh tone in the Gospel today. His words here are a strong rebuke against the towns He had been preaching in. It’s a far cry from the usually peaceful words that we hear Jesus speak. Though, like with every other instance Christ expresses anger in the Gospels, His fury is more than warranted.
Jesus had preached in these towns for much of His ministry. They had seen His miracles, big and small. They had heard His words of wisdom, been taught the Way from the Word itself! Yet they still remained obstinate and plotted against Him! Frankly, who of us wouldn’t react like Jesus in a situation like this?
Despite His anger, Jesus still preaches hope. He states,
“For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Sodm, it would have remained until this day.” Matthew 11:23
If Sodom, the worst of the worst, the pinnacle of sinful cities in the Bible, could attain salvation through Christ, then obviously so can you.
We might not have Christ physically in front of us preaching, teaching, and performing miracles, but we do have His Word and His Church. We have so many blessings and opportunities to see Christ and to hear Him in our lives, all we have to do is to listen.
Ponder:
How can I enter into my faith in a more childlike way today?
Pray:
Lord, thank You for friends who can help show us how to have faith like a child. Thank You for everyday examples of how to have a better relationship with You.
