Today's Gospel: John 7:1-2, 10, 25-30

In the Gospels, there is constant tension between belief and disbelief. People wanting to believe in Jesus but then doubting. And why do they doubt?

They doubt because Jesus doesn’t match the picture they had in their head of the Messiah. They doubt because how could someone who seems average by all physical and lifestyle accounts be the person to save them?

They wanted earthly power. They wanted a stranger. They wanted someone who evoked fear in their enemies. They wanted someone who was the opposite of Jesus.

Can you imagine if Jesus came as this mysterious figure, appearing from nowhere, dressed in armor? Can you imagine if He had been a warrior in the sense that He came to slaughter the Romans? Can you imagine if the Gospels were filled with raging war and stories of Jesus’ earthly throne?

Instead, the Gospels are filled with healing, mercy, miracles, the power of faith, a heavenly kingdom, calling people to be leaders, calling people to care about others more than themselves.

Jesus knew He would be doubted, but He endured it to remind all of us that when He calls us to something great, we will meet our fair share of doubters, of those questioning our authority, or our education, or our experience.

If Jesus was doubted, we most certainly are not immune to being doubted. But if He has called us, that is all we need. With heavenly power, Holy Spirit inspirations, sacramental graces, and so much more, we can always stand strong in the face of doubt in order to carry out the will of the Father.

Ponder:

Do I allow others’ doubts of my abilities to impact how I answer my vocational call?

Pray:

Dear Jesus, help me, like You, never be fearful of those who doubt me, but instead help me move forward in faith. I know You will give me whatever I need to fulfill the will of the Father.
