Today's Gospel: John 8:21-30

At the Christian crisis pregnancy center where I volunteer, we talk to many women who feel so alone and scared. Many come from unstable homes and don’t have much support, either physical or emotional. Frequently, the father of their baby is not a permanent part of their life either. These women can’t even fathom adding a newborn to their insecure lives and often feel like they are the only ones in this situation.

Many of us have had those feelings of being alone and that no one else understands how we feel or what we are going through. Whether we have just gotten a cancerous health diagnosis, suffered the death of a loved one, or can’t make an important decision that will affect our futures, we feel like no one can help us.

But even when Jesus was predicting His future death in today’s Gospel, He told the people that “He [The Father] has not left me alone.” Jesus felt reassured to face His scary future because He knew that He was not alone. We, too, should have that reassurance that we are never alone. Jesus knows how we feel because He went through similar tragedies and is there for us through everything.

One of the best parts of helping these pregnant women is providing physical and emotional support so that they don’t feel alone. We put them in groups with other women in similar circumstances, and we help connect them with resources to fill all their needs. We also pray with them and share the Good News so they may feel the love of God and not feel all alone.

For most any affliction in life, there are support groups available, but especially in our churches.

Ponder:

What do I need to take to God that is overwhelming me and making me feel scared and alone?

Pray:

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for reminding me that I am never alone in my sorrow and fear. Help me be reassured that You love me and desire closeness and joy.
