Daily Gospel Reflection for April 7, 2022

Today's Gospel: John 8:51-59

Everything changes when you have a child, even sometimes your name. I went from being known by my name, to being known as my sons’ mom. Under my new name, those who know my sons are now able to know me.

The relationship between God and His people was defined through His relationship with Abraham. Even God Himself told Moses to tell the Israelites, “The LORD, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you” (Exodus 3:15). So when Jesus starts speaking of things that belong to God, they question His identity. He tells them Who sent Him, Who He Is, but they do not believe Him. They, who should have inherited the faith of their father, did not believe.

Jesus answered,

“If I glorify myself, my glory is worth nothing; but it is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ You do not know him, but I know him."

John 8:54-55

Jesus’ relationship to the Father is so essential that we know Him as the Son. It is the same for us. Those of us who have been baptized are now children of God. This is the relationship that defines us, that identifies us. This is the relationship that makes us heirs of the Kingdom. Through the grace of our baptism, we can say, I believe.

Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever keeps my word will never see death.

John 8:51

What do we see when we hear the words “This is my Body; This is my Blood?" Do we take Him at His Word? He tells us, “Take and eat . . . Take and drink.” Do we believe He is Who He say He is? Do we know Him?

Ponder:

How do we live this relationship, as children of God? How can the world identify us?

Pray:

Mary, our Mother, teach us to ponder, to keep His Word always in our hearts. Pray for us Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
