Today's Gospel: John 8:12-20

The Pharisees often come off as the villains of Scripture. After all, they frequently tried to trap Jesus with trick questions, pointed out whenever He and His followers violated the letter of Jewish law, and, most importantly, doubted that Jesus was who He said He was. But perhaps we can cut the Pharisees some slack. If a man arrived in our midst today claiming to be the Son of God, our first inclination would probably be to think that he needed some psychiatric help.

But Jesus was who He said He was, and He came to show us the way to the Father. He is the light of the world shining in the darkness. Sometimes, like the Pharisees, we also fail to recognize Him. The world can feel so very dark. Every day, we hear news of wars, violence, suffering, abuse, political turmoil, and more. We may also be going through our own personal times of darkness due to physical or mental illness, parenting challenges, financial difficulties, or other struggles. It can be hard to see the light when the darkness feels almost suffocating.

However, Jesus is there, the light is there, if only we take the time to look for Jesus’ presence in our lives. It is helpful to cultivate a practice of gratitude to help you make a conscious effort to notice the light. Where did you see beauty today? Did someone perform an act of kindness for you? Were there a few moments when you felt at peace? Our lives are full of moments of light that show us that Jesus is with us.

Ponder:

Where can you feel Jesus’ presence and light in your life today?

Pray:

Dear Lord, please help me see Your light in my life each day. Thank You for all the blessings You have given me.
