Today's Gospel: John 10:31-42
I struggle with the Holy Trinity, not because it is hard to comprehend three-in-one, but because I cannot easily separate them!
As a child, I was taught the unity of God by a Sister who used an apple as an example. She explained that the skin represented God the Father because the skin protects us, the flesh signifying God the Son because Jesus took on human flesh, and the seeds are like God the Holy Spirit who plants seeds of faith from which we become fruitful.
Her example made me mad at six years old, and stubbornly I had argued, “It’s all apple, and an apple can’t be an apple it you take it apart!” To which she chuckled and continued on.
That concept still confuses my process of prayer. Unable to tease apart Jesus from God the Father from the Holy Spirit, my prayers become a circular comedy of proper nouns. I don’t know whom in that holy crowd I should address!
I’m pretty sure the Holy Threesome takes delight in my sputtering.
Ponder:
Think about your own prayer life. How and when do you address each of God’s persons? Why did you choose to speak to that Presence for that prayer?
Pray:
Beloved God, in my attempts to be proper in my prayers, assure me that all prayer is lovely to your ears.
