Today's Gospel: John 11:45-56
So Jesus no longer walked in public among the Jews, but he left for the region near the desert.
John 11:54
This line from today's Gospel shares a sad similarity to modern day. It seems Jesus is being crowded out of all kinds of places, and His presence in public is diminishing. Some may say it’s because faith is irrelevant, some may say Jesus is old-fashioned, and some would say they have no evidence or knowledge of Him at all. All of those are such heartbreaking statements for a Jesus-lover to hear.
When we ponder this Gospel, we have two courses of action. We can wring our hands and be sad that Jesus is being removed from the public eye, or we can answer the call of the New Evangelization and bring Him everywhere we go!I sat by a gentleman on a flight recently who told me he was an atheist. I asked him why and he replied, “I figured if Jesus was so great that I should believe in Him and follow Him, the people who did would be talking about Him all the time.”
The Jewish leaders were afraid of what the story of Jesus would do. We know the story; we know the power, the love, the mercy and the salvation of Jesus. It’s a story we all have to tell to everyone who will listen. We can tell it with words, with actions, and with symbols we’re willing to explain when people ask. We can wear t-shirts and jewelry, and put bumper stickers on our car. However we are called to share Jesus, we should lovingly and proudly share His good news.
Ponder:
Do we keep our love for Jesus private or are we willing to confidently and happily share his story? How quickly and freely can you answer the question “Were do I see Jesus working in my life?”
Pray:
Jesus, please give me the courage to speak proudly of the ways You love us and share joyfully the wonderful things You are doing in my life.
