Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.
Today's Gospel: John 8:31-42
“If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31
We think we're free. So did the Jews who believed in Jesus, which is ironic because they lived under an oppressive Roman government. And by earthly standards, we do enjoy quite a bit of freedom.
Jesus points out, though, that we are all enslaved by sin (John 8:34). While we may be free to do many things, the sins we commit enslave us and drag us further away from God.
Jesus knew, when He spoke these words to His followers, that people were plotting to kill Him. He knew that His very death would break the chains of sin that bind us -- as long as we remain in His Word.
In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we have the opportunity to be set free once again from our sins. All we need to do is humbly ask forgiveness for what we have done or failed to do, and resolve to remain on the path Jesus has set for us.
Ponder:
How long has it been since I last received absolution for my sins? When can I approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation to be freed from the sins that enslave me?
Pray:
Jesus, guide me in making a humble examination of conscience and confessing my sins, and help me to be ready to remain in Your Word always.
