Today's Gospel: Luke 22:14-23:56

One thing that strikes me about the Passion story is Peter’s denial. I relate to his desire to be by the Lord’s side to the end, but also to his hesitation after. Often, I find myself filled with energy on a project then realize what I got myself into. Maybe I’m excited about a lesson plan for my Confirmation class or a presentation for work. Then it’s showtime and I hesitate. Am I sure about this? They don’t look interested. This feels silly now. It’s not actually that good.

Despite self-talk, I’ve learned to commit in my heart—not just my head—before acting. It’s even more true with faith. Peter never stopped loving Jesus, but he feared for his life. I may not face the same fear, but I wonder if I’m willing to commit to the Lord with fearlessness and not deny Him when the time comes. Will I be able to proclaim my faith with fervor and passion should the moment present itself?

Peter was forgiven, continued his mission, and eventually had the courage to die for the Lord. While this may not be my road, how often have I been embarrassed when asked about my faith and shrugged off a comment when I could have used it as an opportunity to evangelize? I pray I continue to grow in my faith and find the courage of Peter—and the other Apostles and saints—to continue the mission the Lord has given me and spread the Gospel.

The Lord took all our sins upon Himself and died so that we might live in paradise with Him. That’s not something to be taken lightly but to hold close in our hearts daily. Let us, too, embrace our crosses and bear them with the Lord until our missions are fulfilled.

Ponder:

Am I committing myself to the Lord and not denying Him?

Pray:

Lord, help me to remain faithful to You, especially in difficult moments, and not stray from the path You’ve given me. Give me the courage to never deny You, but proclaim Your Gospel.
