Today's Gospel: John 15:12-17

The entire Bible can be wrapped around one overused, underestimated, and misunderstood word: love. We truly misuse and underestimate the meaning of the word love. The greatest commandment is to love God and neighbor (Matthew 22:37-39). If we love God, we will love our neighbor because we know He loves our neighbors. If we truly love our neighbor, we know we are sharing God’s love as well. It comes full circle when we love as God intends. Jesus gives this important commandment to His disciples to be perfectly clear in His desires: He wants us to love one another. In an unfair world filled with pain, war, and disease, love is what the Lord wants from us.

What’s more, He calls us His friends. Jesus has told us what He’s doing. He spent three years teaching and preaching and now He’s sending His disciples forth to spread His love. He wants His disciples - all of us - to bear fruit with the love He’s given us.

Lastly, Jesus says that whatever we ask of the Father in His name, He will give us. This is powerful! This means that when we remain steadfast in His love, spread His love, and remain loyal to His commandment of love, we cannot fail. The Lord will hear us and, when we pray in His name, will grant our prayers when prayed with faith and love.

Ponder:

Am I loving those around me in a way that pleases God?

Pray:

Lord, please help me to love others in the way You love me. When I fail to do so, please gently correct me so I can love better.
