Today's Gospel: Mark 16:9-15

“Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.”

I once knew a woman who was raised Catholic but left the Catholic Church to become a Lutheran pastor. When I asked her why she had made such an extreme decision, she told me that she had been called to proclaim the Gospel, and she could not do that in the Catholic Church. “You can’t preach the Gospel if you’re not a pastor," she declared.

It is not my intention to initiate a discussion about women in the priesthood. This is not the forum, and the Catholic Church is unequivocal in her teaching on this topic. Women have many valuable roles in the Church. The Priesthood is not one of them. Amen.

It is my intention, however, to point out the errors in this woman’s thinking. It is a tragedy to think that she did not realize that all of us—men and women—from all walks of life, are called to preach the Gospel.

Homilies on Sunday mornings are only one of the many ways to share the Gospel message. We share the Gospel when we teach, when we write, when we converse with friends across the fence, or minister to the sick or dying. That is because the message of the Gospel is one of Divine nourishment, given to us by the Lord Himself . . . to all of us! And the message is this: God loves you. He loves you so much that He died for you and rose from the dead so that you, too, could have life everlasting. His love dwells in me, and that is why I am able to bring that love to you, if you’ll only hear the message and believe.

Ponder:

How can I proclaim the Gospel in my station or vocation in life?

Pray:

Precious Lord, fill me with Your Love, that I might bring Your message of life to the people You place in my path.
