Today's Gospel: Matthew 28:8-15

In the smallest details and in the grandest moments, Jesus knows our hearts. Today’s Gospel passage offers a delightful glimpse into the breadth and depth of Jesus’ tenderness toward His followers.

Just prior to this Gospel passage, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to the tomb where they were greeted by the angel. They were told to go back and report what they had seen. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid.” But the women, as we are told in today’s reading, went away “fearful yet overjoyed.” They believed, but they were not confident. I’m sure so many questions swirled in their heads.

Then, on their way, Jesus Himself meets them. He says to them, “Do not be afraid.” Can you not feel their doubt, their concern to have all the answers, their fear of others’ unbelief, melt away?

They had already been told not to fear by the angel. Things had been somewhat explained. But their fear had remained. They needed something more. They needed Jesus Himself.

How often do we fall into the same place as the women? We have been told the end of the story - Jesus lives! The Savior has come! We know the Good News. But somehow, we are still afraid. Will our faith be popular? Will others laugh at us? Will other doubt or question us?

Jesus knows this. Just as He knew the women’s fears. He can to them to give them courage and strength. He comes to us just the same. When we come to the altar, we are face to face with Jesus. He looks upon us with tender eyes. He tells us the same thing He told the women on the road, “Do not be afraid.” He is here, He is with us always.

Ponder:

Jesus wants to take away your fear. What fears do you need to relinquish into His hands?

Pray:

Dear Jesus, thank You for Your tenderness and attentiveness to our every need. Help me to let You take away my fear so I may be a bold follower of Your Will.
