Today's Gospel: John 21:1-14

My favorite images of St. Peter’s humanity are contained in today’s Gospel reading, which recounts the third time Jesus revealed Himself to His Disciples after His resurrection. At first, Peter did not recognize the Lord when He appeared at the water’s edge and commanded them to

Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.

St. Peter was too preoccupied with the task of pulling in all the fish caught to recognize the Lord. Instead, another disciple leaned over and told him.

But, upon being told ‘it is Our Lord,' St. Peter did not waste any time. He embodies what each one of us should be, how each one of us should act when we hear God’s Word.

When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea.

Impetuous, desiring to be the first one to be with Him, not waiting to be asked. St. Peter rushed to Our Lord without even thinking! He did not need to be asked, nor did he consider his own safety. He knew he would be safe.

He trusted Jesus completely. We can all learn a valuable lesson from St. Peter. There is no need to wait for Jesus to come to us. He is always nearby. We should not fear what the day will bring, for He already knows and will bring us safely through it. Never get so caught up in day-to-day minutiae you forget to see God in every person and every wonder encountered.

Emulate St. Peter. Be excited to greet the Lord always.

Ponder:

Do I take time each day to contemplate how truly wonderful it is to walk with Jesus in my life?

Pray:

Lord, I want to be like St. Peter, especially in his zeal to be with You. Help me to consider You in all that I do and see.
