Today's Gospel: Luke 12:13-21
Teaching children not to be jealous of what others have is paramount to raising adults who understand the key to lasting happiness, but it is not easy in today’s world. Children want the newest app, toy, and video game. As teenagers, many yearn for the newest fashion, latest cell phone, and faster computer. As parents, we either give in or say no.
My own parents did not play the "Keeping up with the neighbors" game, and I married a man who believes less is best. When he buys a new shirt, he comes home and throws an old one away. Although I am not as proficient in doing the same, we both realize the value in living, as my mom used to say, with one foot on earth and one aimed for Heaven.
Today’s Gospel even talks about a rich man who didn’t live long enough to enjoy what he had. A hoarder by today's standard, nothing was ever enough. He kept building bigger so he could store more and more of his riches. What he had was never enough. He was always looking towards tomorrow. His motto? When I have this, I will be happy.
Ironically, before he could relax and enjoy his riches, he died. He never learned the value of sharing. He never enjoyed giving to others from what he had. He was never content.
Thankfully, we have grandchildren whose parents are teaching them how to give. If they get a new book they donate one to their library. On birthdays and holidays, get one, give one away is a way of life. They are learning through action that the key to happiness is in giving, and this is what matters to God.
Ponder:
Are you teaching your children to live in ways that matter to God?
Pray:
Lord, give me the grace to never covet what others have. Help me to always keep my eyes on my final destination, which I pray lies with You.
