Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: John 15:1-8

On this feast day of St. Joseph the Worker, it is appropriate that we have a Gospel reading full of the work that a farmer performs. The Father is the "vine grower,” “pruner,” and the one who evaluates the fruitfulness of a vine and its branches.

St. Joseph was a hard worker who honed his craft and taught Jesus how to do the same in order to provide quality work and sustain their family. He taught the dignity of hard work, completing good products, and the self-respect that comes with being a provider.

But the Gospel is also a parable showing God's relationship to us. He wants us to work hard to take in the nutrition we need to grow spiritually. This nutrition is God’s Word, Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, listening to His voice in our prayers, learning from Jesus how to live and treat others, and turning to the Holy Spirit to guide and strengthen us. These should all nourish us and fill us with God’s love and goodness so that we bear fruit for Him. We should take in God’s nourishment, then keep Him in our heart throughout our days so He remains in us.

St. Joseph was blessed to have Jesus present with him every day to help show him how to live, work, and grow in God’s love. We too are blessed to have Jesus inside us, helping us grow our branch to be fruitful and help grow His church. Our families are little churches and these lessons help strengthen them too. As long as we keep praying and attending Mass regularly, we will stay connected to the vine that is strongly rooted and will help us grow and please Him by being His disciples.

Ponder:

In what way is God pruning you and desiring you to work harder for Him?

Pray:

My dear Jesus, help me to seek You so I can grow in Your love and work to build Your Church on earth. Remain in me so I may remain always with You.
