Today's Gospel: John 21:1-19

This Gospel is such a powerful message of Jesus's love and mercy!

Imagine you are Peter at this moment. Really sit with it. You have been haunted by the words of Jesus at the Last Supper: "This very night before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.”

And when it happened, when you denied Him exactly as He predicted, you were overcome with shame and grief. You were embarrassed by your inability to be steadfast in your friendship during the Passion.

And here He is – asking you “if you love me” - three times.

Exactly as many times as you denied Him during His trial and execution.

When you answer, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you,” your heart is so heavy, the shame so overwhelming.

Jesus sees this, and He gives complete clarity to Peter – and to us when we are not steadfast in our faith. When we deny or forget Christ in our life – when we fail to live, work, or speak in a way that demonstrates His love for all those souls we encounter- He forgives us and directs us to begin again. Feed His lambs, gather His sheep – minister to those placed in our path.

Ponder:

Are we as forgiving as Jesus is to Peter in our relationships? Do we work on finding a path forward, or do we wallow in betrayal or disappointment?

Pray:

Jesus, help me to remain steadfast in my love for You and demonstrate my love by my words, deeds, and service.
