Today's Gospel: Luke 6:27-38
It is impossible to read the Gospel today and not dwell on the events of 9-11.
“But rather, love your enemies and do good to them,
and lend expecting nothing back;
then your reward will be great
and you will be children of the Most High,
for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
Be merciful, just as also your Father is merciful.”
Two parts of this Gospel stand out to me as a mother: “...and you will be children of the Most High,” and the call to be merciful.
Once, I heard Immaculee Ilibagiza speak in person. Immaculée is a devout Catholic and survivor of the Rwandan genocide who lost most of her family as a young woman during the conflict . Her story of the power of forgiveness changed my life.
Hate is never from God, always from Satan. And light always conquers the dark. We must have childlike confidence in our heavenly Father to help us heed this impossible call to love and forgive our enemies. We look no farther than Christ Himself, who modeled this from the cross.
In our families, we need to model this childlike confidence in God to right all wrongs in His time and trust in His divine protection during our time on earth.
Ponder:
Who do I struggle to forgive in my life? In the world at large?
Pray:
Lord, grant me the grace to forgive. Heal me from any hate I harbor in my heart, so I may more fully reflect Your love in the world.
