Today's Gospel: John 10:27-30

“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand” (John 10:28-29).

I grew up on a farm with a small herd of sheep. Early on in my sheep raising days, we had some gaps in the fence that clever little lambs would find each year. I would sometimes go out to the pasture and a lamb would be looking at me from just outside the fencing. Occasionally they had wandered away and I would need to figure out exactly where they’d gotten out and how I could get them back in if they were too heavy to carry. Our flock was more livestock than pets—the lambs would come to their mom’s bleats, but not necessarily when I called. Their moms, however, would run to me if I called or if they expected me to feed them.

In this Gospel, Jesus tells us that no one can take us away from Himself. If Jesus’ hand is like a fence, then safely inside the fence we cannot perish. The only way to lose eternal life is to wander away or not hear the voice of the shepherd. Jesus warns those at the Temple that they are not among His sheep. Jesus says, “You are not among my sheep because you do not believe.” But what sets the sheep apart? They hear Jesus’ voice and follow Him. Not only this, but Jesus knows them.

The sheep are set apart by their attentiveness to Jesus’ voice and their relationship with Him. Rather than wandering in our own way, Jesus invites us to follow Him and find peace in His protection.

Ponder:

Lord, am I wandering away from You or toward You in my life right now?

Pray:

Jesus, help me to know Your voice and to hear it. Help me to follow You daily.
