Reflection by Fr. Edward Looney

Today's Gospel: John 10:22-30

Every Sunday at Mass we stand after the homily and profess our belief in God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit by either the Nicene Creed or the Apostles Creed. These words are committed to our memory, and we might not even think about them as we recite them. Jesus shared many teachings in the Gospel. He taught about the Bread of Life and how people must eat His body and drink His blood. Many people did not believe in those words, and they turned away from Jesus. Jesus taught that the Son of Man would have to rise from the dead. Many people did not understand what this meant and so they didn’t believe.

When addressing the Jews in the Gospel, Jesus says to them, “I told you and you do not believe.” Is he saying the same thing to us? I have told you about the kingdom of Heaven, about the Eucharist, about forgiveness, and yet you do not believe. Even though we have been taught these things, maybe our belief and assent is not there yet. We have a loved one die. Do I believe in eternal life? I go to Mass and see the host elevated; do I believe in the Real Presence? I have done some terrible things and have gone to Confession. Do I believe that Jesus really forgave me? These are things we are supposed to believe but are we like those in the Gospel who have heard and yet do not believe? Whatever doubt(s) we might have, we can ask the Lord to remove them and strengthen our faith. Look for the workings of God in your life, and when you see them, hopefully you can come to believe in what Jesus has taught, and what we profess every Sunday.

Ponder:

What would Jesus have to do for you to make you believe all that He taught?

Pray:

My God, I believe. Help my unbelief. Remove my doubts so that I might know and love You all the days of my life.

Faith means that we believe. Are there some things you find difficult to accept and give assent to? What is holding you back from complete faith in Jesus?
