Reflection by Colleen Rooney

Today's Gospel: John 10:1-10

Our Lord tells us we will know Him by His voice. I started thinking of the importance of familiar voices in our lives. There is nothing like the soothing voice of a mother when you are not feeling well. Or the deep voice of a father when you are frightened and need a reassuring presence. There are voices of siblings and friends who call us to play. There are many voices in our life. The most treasured and trusted are the loving and encouraging ones.

But there are other voices. Voices that draw us away from what is loving and true. It might be the voice of the tempter encouraging us to sin. I remember as a child being asked if I had eaten a candy bar. Well, I had eaten it. It was delicious, but it was not mine to eat, and I said I had not eaten it. The voice of truth did not speak, but the other voice did.

There is one strong and godly voice, the voice of the Good Shepherd, Jesus. He leads us, His sheep, to the gate. The gatekeeper opens the door for Him, and we hear His voice and follow. Jesus makes it clear that His voice is the one we can trust because He lays down His life for us. There are other voices, voices that care nothing for us, but it is His voice that we hear and can trust.

In life, there are times of uncertainty when we do not have the answers. How comforting it is to know we can trust Him to lead us through the trials and tribulation, the difficulties that we all will face, and bring us safely home.

Ponder:

Do I listen for the Lord’s voice knowing that it is His voice that I can trust to show me the way and bring me home safely to eternal life?

Pray:

Lord, please show me in prayer how to listen to Your voice. Grant that I may realize Your guidance will bring me and all those entrusted to my care home to You.
