Today's Gospel: John 14: 21-26

The Holy Spirit is perhaps the greatest and most underutilized element of the Christian journey. The Holy Spirit, the Advocate as Jesus refers to Him in our passage today, is the Third Person of the Holy Trinity. Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will come and be with the followers to “teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.”

I don’t know about you, but there is so much I find myself unable to remember! Often, it’s trivial things, like the name of a book title or which direction to turn at the next light. More often than I’d like, however, I find myself forgetting the truths that will lead me to true and lasting happiness.

See if any of these statements/questions resonate with you:

  • I am in charge of my life.
  • I need to earn everyone’s approval with perfect actions and appearance.
  • This sin is unforgivable.
  • How can someone else love me?
  • If I check off everything on my to do list it means I’m a good and worthy person.
  • I just don’t have time for prayer.

Any winners? All of these, and I do mean all of them, are false. The devil uses ideas such as these to undermine our relationship with God.

Jesus said the Holy Spirit would remind us of all Jesus had taught and said. How many of us have asked the Holy Spirit to do just that in our lives? God doesn’t force Himself into our hearts. He is a gentleman and waits to be invited. Today, let’s invite the Holy Spirit to come into our hearts to do the work Jesus sent Him to do.

Ponder:

Which question resonated with you? What truth is the Holy Spirit reminding you of today?

Pray:

Dear Holy Spirit, come into my heart. Open my eyes to the words of Jesus and inspire me to put them into action today.
