Today's Gospel: John 16:16-20
Today in the Gospel message, Jesus shares something with His disciples that they do not initially understand. Instead of going to Him with their confusion, they instead chat amongst themselves a bit, puzzling over His meaning. I can picture Jesus being a little amused as He overhears them and calls them on not just addressing Him with their question. Are they afraid of the answer?
Perhaps. There is a time coming when they will experience pain and loss, and they will grieve. Ultimately though, they will experience joy; they just cannot yet see how this will come about.
This reading is speaking to my heart today because this is my daughter’s birthday. It is also the day that my son, my first born, will graduate from high school. When I brought each of my children into the world I experienced physical pain, but after that passed, I of course experienced deep emotional joy. On this day, twelve years after I gave birth to my daughter, I am grieving a bit amongst the excitement: it’s the end of an era, the marking of a milestone that signals the end of my son’s childhood. I do know that there is joy to come in the new chapter that lies ahead for our entire family, but I’m still feeling a bit teary about it today. I imagine this is somewhat akin to how the disciples felt as they slowly came to understand Jesus’s words. A challenging time is about to unfold, but beyond that is unfathomable joy.
Ponder:
When I'm trying to work through or discern something, do I spend a lot of time puzzling it out on my own, or do I go straight to Jesus?
Pray:
Lord, help me to spend less time worrying through things and agonizing over how best to proceed. Please nudge my heart that I should rest peacefully in Your loving care for me, knowing that You will always show me the way.
