Today's Gospel: John 21:20-25

I have had two cars totaled within a year, one by each of two of my children. My son hit a parked car; he paid me the deductible. A few months later, my daughter hit some wet pavement and couldn’t stop, hitting the base of a street light. Because she did not have any money, she worked off the debt by painting the shutters on our house. She then asked me why her brother hadn’t had to do any hard work after he totaled the car. First, I told her I didn’t owe her an explanation about how I dealt with her brother. However, I did tell her that he paid me cash for my deductible. The lightbulb went off and I believe she understood how I was trying to be fair with both of them in their own way.

God deals with His children the same way--individually. His dealings with us may not always seem just but we must remember He is justice. Jesus said to Peter,

“What if I want Him to remain until I come? What concern is it of yours? You follow Me.”

We need to trust that Jesus knows what He is doing and, like Peter, we should not concern ourselves about how He deals with someone else. We, like Peter, should be concerned about following Him and being an exemplary disciple. Jesus emphasized how even though we don’t always know why or how situations are being dealt with, we should trust that He knows what He is doing.

Ponder:

Do I trust that Jesus will deal justly with everyone according to their situation and their heart?

Pray:

Dear Lord, let me follow You. Help me to trust that You know what is good for me.
