Today's Gospel: John 21:20-25

So often mothers direct one sibling to not worry about what another sibling is doing or to keep their nose in their own business. We have all done that! That is the tone I initially sense when Jesus asks Peter,

“What concern is it of yours?”

I assume Jesus is criticizing Peter, putting Peter in his place, directing him to mind his own business. But knowing Jesus’ sways, I wonder if He could have a more gentle and comforting intent.

Perhaps instead of a keep-your-nose-out-of-it sarcastic question, Jesus is really reassuring Peter that there is no need for Peter to worry himself about this. Jesus then declares a reassuring truth:

“You follow Me.”

Jesus reminds us that He has got this taken care of.

Think about your life. What are you praying for that is a thinly veiled request for things to turn out the way you want? Are you turning to God actually seeking reassurance that something will turn out the way you want? Where do you believe you can’t have peace unless you are guaranteed a certain outcome? Perhaps that is what what Peter was seeking, to know that things would turn out the way he thought they should. Today, Jesus is reassuring you, reminding you that “you follow [Him],” that you do not have to concern yourself with or worry about the future. He has your future and that of your loved ones perfectly planned, and He will take care of you in every way as your future unfolds.

Ponder:

In what way can I let go of worry about the future and trust that God has it perfectly planned for His glory?

Pray:

Lord, give me the confidence and trust that You have perfectly planned my life and that of my loved ones. I know you will care for all of us at every single moment.
