Today's Gospel: Matthew 10:28-31

In this scene, I imagine an exhausted, confused Peter, seeking reassurance that all of the sacrifices he’s made for Jesus will eventually pay off. Peter’s once-strong conviction is waning and fear is setting in as he recognizes there is nothing to which to return - he has given up everything to follow Jesus. He is scared and wants Jesus’s consultation.

How often are we just like Peter? Once strong in our conviction about a choice, our confidence wavers when we are doing what we think God wants or making sacrifices but don’t have the feeling or result that we anticipated. We believe something must be wrong. We get scared and want reassurance we are doing the right thing.

Thinking we know how we should feel or liking to feel certain emotions over others is a very natural human desire. However, as a society, we use our feelings as a measure of truth to our detriment. We eat too much, say hurtful things, and get offended easily, just to name a few, because that is what we feel like doing or feel is true.

Let us remember that our thoughts and feelings are NOT always truths, unless they are rooted in Christ’s truth. It’s easy to know if a thought is rooted in God’s truth. It brings peace. Feelings and thoughts that cause fear, division, and confusion do not come from Christ.

Jesus is so happy when we desire Him as the source of truth. And, we can experience the peace of His truth, no matter what, knowing that we are choosing His ways, rather than simply using our feelings as our guide.

Ponder:

What sacrifice do I know Jesus sees me making for Him that brings a smile to His face, no matter how I feel? How can I let His truth bring me peace?

Pray:

Lord, I trust and love You. Please grant me the gift of feeling peace, knowing that everything I do for You glorifies Your kingdom and pleases You.
