Today's Gospel: Luke 1:39-56
Sweet Mary. How my heart leaps with joy when I hear her song! I imagine it is the same joy that Elizabeth's unborn child felt when he lept in her womb. The beauty and humility in Mary's beautifully expressed words always stir a longing and desire in me to experience the same joy in her surrender to the Lord.
And yet, I know that I lack the humility that Mary has.
I am reminded that the Lord's plans for me began while I was still in my mother's womb. As I look back on my life leading up to the present day, I can see how my lack of surrender and obedience in the past led me to experience much anxiety. In my lack of surrender, I relied on my own strength instead of trusting the Lord and leaning into Him.
Mary gave the Lord her fiat and leaned into Him, surrendering her will to Him in complete trust. She knew the Lord would care for her and provide all she needed, and she could see how the Lord had worked throughout her life, preparing her for this moment, which I imagine led to her feelings of peace and joy.
I try to imagine what it must have been like back then. To be a young teenage girl who had just given the Lord her fiat to His radical plan of saving the world, crowning her queen of heaven and mother of His son. I wonder if Joseph traveled with her to visit her cousin, Elizabeth. I cannot help but smile, imagining the joy and excitement when the two cousins greeted each other, and I wonder if it is the same feeling of excitement as when I finally see my cousins after a long while between visits.
Ponder:
Do you struggle with humility, and can you see how it plays a vital role in your relationship with Jesus?
Pray:
Dear Mary, help me to walk in humility and trust our Lord. Help me to joyfully accept and surrender to His will for my life.
