Reflection by Colleen O'Dowd

Today's Gospel: Luke 17:11b-19

Today we remember St. Justin Martyr, and we are reminded in the Gospel by Jesus that if we ever think we are abandoned, forgotten, or left to fend for ourselves we need only to come back to this passage. God has been on our side from the beginning!

Especially when God sends Jesus.

Jesus, Who is both my Redeemer in that He surrenders His life to ransom mine and my Savior in that He continues to heal me, doesn’t just stop there! Jesus continues to intercede with His Father and mine – God – on my behalf, right here and right now.

And boy, I need it. Because sometimes I am pretty much a ding-dong.

Can you imagine? When Jesus prayed these words 2,000 years ago, He was thinking of only me. And only you. And only that person who annoys you.

Jesus makes it possible for me to do and be everything He is and does. Through the power of His surrender and death on the cross, He ransoms you and I for spiritual adoption by God.

And He consecrates Himself as the Truth so that we, too, might be consecrated in the Truth.

To be consecrated means to be set apart.

Not alone.

Apart.

Set apart for a special task. A special mission. A mission from God.

This is what it means to be a child of God. “…that we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life…”

That's some big stuff.

But we can be confident that Jesus is always setting us up for success in His mission and He will always accompany us when we desire to grow in holiness.

Ponder:

Do I /Can I really believe I am consecrated -- set apart -- by God for holiness and mission?

Pray:

Lord Jesus, increase my faith in Your redemption of me for Your love of me. Increase my faith in Your continued forgiveness of all my sins, healing of all my wounds and all my scars, for Your love of me.
