Reflection by Fr. Edward Looney

Today's Gospel: Mark 12:28-34

Do you love God? Do you love God with your entire being? We want the answer to be yes. We hope the answer is yes. Some days we might love God more than other days. It’s easy to love God when everything is going well. It’s harder to love God when nothing is going right. When it comes to love of God, we can ask a few questions: Why do I love God? How do I love God?

When it comes to why we love God, I’d like to direct you to a spiritual work by St. Bernard of Clairvaux called On Loving God. Essentially, he says there are reasons we love God and some of them are not the purest. For example, some people love God because they want God to do something for them. I love God because He’s the giver of all good gifts, and I want to keep receiving good gifts. The motive for loving God is based on what God can do for me.

We should love God because of who God is—we love God because by His very being God is lovable. We also love God because He loves us. God so loved the world that He gave His Son. His Son loved us so much that He died to redeem us.

After we know why we love God, then we can show that love by our prayer, adoration, and service. I love God most especially when I keep the commandments. And I love God when I love my neighbor.

Let us strive to love God right now, by word, action, and avoiding sin, so that we might love God for all eternity with all the angels and saints.

Ponder:

Is it evident by how I live my life that I love God?

Pray:

I love you, God. Help me love You more. Remove from my heart whatever is preventing me from loving You and my neighbor.
