Reflection by Fr. Edward Looney
Today's Gospel: John 21:15-19
The Gospel story today is one every person can appreciate. Jesus is giving St. Peter a second chance. Jesus told Peter in the garden that he would deny knowing Him. Peter didn’t believe that he would do that, but after it happened, and the cock crowed, Peter confirmed that Jesus knew. Now, Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves Him. Each time, Peter responds affirmatively. Peter even says to Jesus,
“Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.”
He is able to say with such great certainty, “Lord, you know everything.” He does. He is God. He demonstrated that so many times throughout the Gospels. He knew the thoughts of people’s hearts, and He knew what the apostles were arguing about on the way.
Jesus knows everything. He knows the motives of our hearts. He knows if we are truly sorry for our sins in confession. He knows if we trust His plan for our lives. He knows if we really believe in Him. He knows if we love Him.
Recently, I read the writings of Fr. Willy Doyle, SJ, who wrote that his only aim was to love Jesus. I read those words and thought that was a lofty ideal. I wondered, “Is loving Jesus my only aim?” Many things are competing for our love. If the other things that I love are taking the place of Mass and prayer, how much then do I love Jesus? The Lord knows what we love. He knows everything. He wants us to love Him first and everything else in its proper order.
Today, Jesus asks us if we love Him. What is your answer? Can the Lord, who knows everything, believe you?
Ponder:
What are the things that someone might think you love more than Jesus?
Pray:
Jesus, I love You. I renew my love for You and ask You to purify my love so that You are number one. I receive Your love and now love You in return.
