Today's Gospel: Matthew 5:17-19

“Ouch!” That’s my first response when I hear the words of the Lord from Matthew’s fifth chapter: “Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven.”

As a mother, a role model, and a mentor, I have plenty of opportunities for failure when it comes to setting a good example. Sometimes, I fail to recognize the power of my words—for good or for evil. What am I teaching those around me, especially the younger people in my sphere of influence? Are my teachings in line with a citizen of heaven?

The fact is, I am all too human, and I make many mistakes. But the saving grace is that I can return to the Lord in the Sacrament of Reconciliation when I stumble along life’s path. With the graces provided through the sacrament, I can gain the strength necessary to conquer sin and live in the freedom that God wishes for each of us.

Like a good coach, Jesus offers us an incentive to improve our performance on the gridiron of life: “ . . . whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” We have something to aspire to—the beauty and everlasting goodness of the heavenly realm. God has not left us orphans. He will help us every step of the way.

Does Jesus set a high bar? Most assuredly. But He also promises that He will not abandon us on our earthly journey. His wisdom, His solace, His peace are only a prayer away.

So the “ouch” we may experience at His words is like the feeling we get when we get a shot. It may hurt initially, but it is for our lasting good.

Ponder:

How can I better respond to Jesus’ call to follow His commands?

Pray:

You know my struggles with sin. Help me to overcome them, and to more closely follow You.
