Today's Gospel: John 20:19-23

Jesus has a habit of showing up in the least likely of places. You have probably had the experience of finding the Lord in an unexpected location, surprising and delighting you. He is truly the Lord of surprises, and He loves sharing His love with us when we least expect it.

In today’s Gospel, the disciples were living in fear mode. They had seen their beloved Savior crucified—and they thought they might be next. Their apprehension seems entirely justified, and yet, God does not want any of us to live in fear.

Perhaps that was part of the reason why Jesus chose to show Himself to His disciples. He offered them the gift they longed for—peace. But He did not sugarcoat what had occurred before. He showed them the scars He had incurred through His Passion.

Imagine being in that room, with the doors locked, and suddenly seeing Jesus before you. How would you respond? Would you rejoice, like the disciples did? Jesus did not come to the disciples simply to say hello. He was preparing them for the challenging tasks that lay ahead. He gave them the profound gift of the Holy Spirit, noting that they would have the power to forgive sins. What an incredible role they play in salvation history!

We all need to be prepared for Jesus showing up in our lives. He loves us more than anyone else does, and He wants what is best for us. When we are able to listen to Him, our world can be turned upside down—but in a good way—a way that leads to everlasting life.

So do not be afraid of the Lord’s commission. Recognize that He will equip you with all you need to carry out His instructions. Trust Him implicitly.

Ponder:

How is Jesus showing up in your life this week?

Pray:

Lord, You know me better than I know myself. Help me to carry out the unique mission You have chosen for me.
