Today's Gospel: Mark 12:35-37
It would have been enough for those gathered in the temple to hear Jesus speak of the Messiah as the Son of David. The crowd gathered there understands that the promised messiah is to come from the lineage of King David. It's likely that they heard the whispers of Jesus being just such a man. In fact, the angels had announced Him as the Christ, the Messiah, the Anointed One, at His birth, and such things are unlikely to have remained quiet.
But Jesus goes on to quote Psalm 110:1. “The Lord says to my lord: 'Sit at my right hand, while I make your enemies your footstool.”
In the previous chapter and earlier verses, Jesus was subjected to some tricky questioning. Jesus now poses a question Himself: If David was only speaking of the messianic descendent of David, how would the son of David also be called Lord by David? Verse 37 tells us that the crowd is delighted to hear this.
So, what is the message here? St. Paul wraps it up nicely in Romans 1:1-4, explaining the Messiah is much greater than simply a royal descendent of David. He is the Son of God.
More than the Kingdom of Judah is at stake here. Through Jesus, the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.
Ponder:
Would steeping myself more deeply in sacred scripture increase my faith, delight, and understanding?
Pray:
Heavenly Father, lead me to study Your Word more often and more expectantly. Holy Spirit, guide me to know the Son more fully, and in so doing, increase my faith, delight, and understanding.
