Explore how Jesus fulfills the law in Matthew 5:17-19, calling us to live and teach God's commandments with love and integrity in our daily lives.
Today's Gospel: Matthew 5:17-19
In this powerful passage, Jesus assures us that He did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it. He reveals Himself as the fulfillment of the entire Old Testament—God’s promises, prophecies, and commandments find their perfection in Him. As Catholics, we understand that the law is not dismissed, rather, deepened through Christ, who gives it its fullest meaning in love and mercy.
Jesus is clear: the moral law still matters. His words remind us that fidelity to even the “smallest part” of God’s law reflects our faithfulness to the whole. In a world that often encourages us to dismiss what feels difficult or outdated, Jesus calls us to integrity. We’re not only to keep His commandments but to teach them by our words and by our example.
The Catechism and teachings of the Catholic Church echo this, teaching us that the commandments are not burdens but guides that shape us into saints.
This Gospel invites us to live with consistency: what we believe, we must practice; we must “walk the talk” as they say. And what we practice, we must lovingly pass on—especially to our children and those entrusted to our care.
Ponder:
Am I living and teaching my children God’s commandments with faithfulness and love, even in the small things?
Pray:
Jesus, help me to live Your commandments not out of obligation, but out of love. Teach me to be a faithful witness to others by how I live.
Pray Together:
Choose one of the Ten Commandments and discuss as a family how you can live it more fully this week, committing to helping each other grow in faith.
