Reflect on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, exploring meekness, humility, and the transformative power of love in times of hardship.
Today's Gospel: Matthew 11:25-30
You may have heard the popular analogy about what happens when we are holding a cup of coffee and we get bumped, causing us to spill its contents. The lesson it teaches is that whatever is inside of our cup will spill out when we are "bumped" by the hardships of life. Whether it is bitterness and anger, or kindness and mercy, whatever we hold within our hearts will inevitably come out in times of difficulty.
Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In the Gospel reading, Jesus says,
" Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves." (Matthew 11:29)
What does it mean to be "meek and humble of heart?" Meekness can mean gentleness, mildness, or affability, traits that can be difficult to maintain in times of hardship or persecution. As humans, our hearts often become angry and indignant when we are injured. Jesus's heart, however, remained meek and humble throughout His life, even when tested.
Jesus never responded with violence or retribution when He was opposed or wronged, He demonstrated perfect meekness as He suffered and died on the Cross. His spirit remained gentle and docile, and He forgave His oppressors from the heart.
Jesus extends this mercy and love to us as well. He tells us that when we labor and are burdened, we will find rest when we turn to Him and entrust ourselves to His heart. In a 17th-century private revelation, Jesus gave St. Margaret Mary Alacoque twelve promises for those who would love and venerate His sacred heart. Through devotion to His heart, our hearts can be transformed, and we can learn to love like Jesus did.
Ponder:
What is the response of my heart in moments of trials and difficulty?
Pray:
Jesus, please teach me meekness and humility of heart. Make my heart like Yours, and help me to love as You did.
Pray Together:
Make an Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in honor of today's solemnity.
