Today's Gospel: Matthew 5:17-19

In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us that,

“Until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law.”

I’ll be the first person to admit that this scripture passage is almost inscrutable. In my years as a Catholic convert, a ministry leader, and an apologetics enthusiast, this scripture passage has been regularly hurled in my direction by atheists and agnostics alike. They typically choose the most menial prescription from Leviticus and then ask me if I’m still keeping those laws, since that is what our God demands.

Like I said, at first blush this argument seems difficult to dismantle. But the truth is that when Jesus tells us that He is the fulfillment of the law, He is indicating that the Mosaic Law laid the groundwork for the structure that is Jesus Christ. The foundation waited in readiness for the sanctuary, which came to us as the infant of Bethlehem 2,000 years ago, the New Covenant rising from the Old Covenant.

Flesh on stone . . . the heart of God, in the flesh of man.

Ponder:

What does it mean to have the law of God written on my heart?

Pray:

Lord, keep me in the law of Your love. Help me to follow Your commandments with the help of Your Son, now and always.
