Discover how Jesus calls us to serve in our families, fostering love and kindness as we become laborers in the harvest of His Kingdom.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 9:36-10:08

Today’s Gospel shows us the tenderness of Jesus’s heart.

“At the sight of the crowds, Jesus' heart was moved with pity for them because they were troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd.”

Out of that compassion, He tells His disciples, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few,” and then sends them out to heal, to cast out burdens, and to proclaim the closeness of God’s Kingdom.

We often think of the harvest as mission fields in far-off lands. But Jesus began with the people right in front of Him. He knew their needs, their wounds, and their hunger for love. He asked His disciples to respond, not with grand gestures, but with simple, faithful service to others as well.

That same call reaches us today. Families are both the harvest and the laborers. In a world that can leave people feeling lost or overwhelmed, homes can become places of safety, comfort, healing, witness, and hope. The work of the Kingdom takes root in ordinary moments around the dinner table, during bedtime prayers, in the quiet persistence of parents raising children with love.

When parents forgive, when children comfort each other, when a family chooses patience, kindness, or prayer over anger, selfishness, or distraction, they are laboring in God’s vineyard.

The harvest is still abundant. The world still longs for love and direction. But through their everyday faithfulness, families are already part of God’s answer. Let us pray for more laborers, while remembering that our own homes are sacred places where the Kingdom draws near.

Ponder:

How am I being called to be a laborer in the harvest today in my family with forgiveness, kindness, prayer or ordinary moments?

Pray:

Lord, help me to see every interaction with another person as an opportunity to serve you in the harvest.

Pray Together:

At dinner or bedtime, invite each family member to share one way they showed (or received) kindness, forgiveness, or patience today.
